College Students: Mobile App Helps You Shop Smarter for Things Like Beauty Products
A great deal of them recycle, carpool, and do their best not to waste water. They exhibit a genuine concern about the future of our planet. They are making changes in every aspect of their life from shopping to socializing. It’s no surprise, then, that many of them are looking toward the ever-evolving world of technology to help them in their cause.
Enter the GoodGuide app. Available for both iPhones and Androids, this mobile application helps consumers make smarter decisions about everyday products such as toothpaste and mascara. How it works is simple. Just download the free app onto your smartphone, aim it at a product’s barcode and wait for the results. The user will instantly gain environmental, ethical and safety information about the item, making it easier for people to make informed choices about the companies they support.
Now, I’m not saying this app was made exclusively for college students, but it is definitely college-friendly. Think about it, kids these days never go anywhere without their phone. Plus, with crazy school and work schedules, they have little to no time to research each and every purchase they make BEFORE heading to the store. So, considering their lifestyle the ease and convenience offered by GoodGuide app just makes sense.

Run by professors and grad students at UC Berkeley, GoodGuide users, rest easy knowing they are getting quality information they can trust.
So, before you buy that next bottle of shampoo or reach for that supposed “miracle” moisturizer, for check its stats with GoodGuide to see if it helps or hurts Mother Nature as a whole. Planet Earth will thank you!

Leonor Greyl has used natural ingredients to formulate her hair products for more than 40 years. It’s the type of natural beauty salon and hair care product company that is so native to a Parisienne’s beauty regime, that it’s become cultural. In that sense, as a visitor or tourist, you wouldn’t necessarily know it was there or that it was “naturelle” until someone deemed you worthy enough to tell you.
It’s not that the Leonor Greyl salon is hidden. Not at all! Its location just behind Madeleine in Paris’s 8th arrondissement makes it a perfect appointment stop just before partaking of the Crillon High Tea, stopping in at Hédiard for a gift box of “fruit jellies” or finding that perfect silk scarf at Hermès.
Its second-floor (first floor, French) locale gives the Leonor Greyl salon that intimate feeling of a ritual to be indulged in, a ritual to be shared only with your inner circle, and a ritual that is all about taking time just for yourself.
It’s worth reserving in advance for the Salon Privée or the private treatment room. It’s just a small room off the main salon floor but the experience cordons you off from the salon chatter and symphony of hair dryers. It is also here where Leonor Greyl’s signature treatments are given.
One of these signature treatments is designed for deep hydration of not just your hair follicles but all the way down to your scalp. This ritual is called “ventouse therapy” and it begins with your hair esthetician, in this case, Nina, a delightful Parisian sporting a gold Bindi, who will apply a honey thick dose of “huile de germe de ble” or wheat germ oil to your whole head of hair.
The wheat germ oil is used as a treatment for hair that tends toward oily. The vegetable oils and vitamins of the wheat germ facilitates the elimination of excess sebum at the roots of your hair. The result is shinier, more voluminous hair where “health and vitality” glows through from the roots to the tips.
The Ventouse Therapy is what you can request while the wheat germ oil is left on your hair for more thorough penetration. It is a small suction cup that your hair esthetician will place on small sections of your scalp. You will feel a slight vacuum sensation as the oil and the delicate skin of your scalp mingle to achieve a deep hydration and revitilization of hair and skin follicles. This therapy stimulates healthy hair growth, or so swear generations of satisfied Leonor Greyl clients.
After the Ventouse Therapy your hair is wrapped in a warm towel, your esthetician gives you a neck, shoulder and arm massage and then you are left to enjoy your warm herbal tea while you relax in the reclining chair with your head under a cocooning hair dryer for 10-15 minutes. This is where the privacy and quietude of the Salon Privée is most appreciated.
You can be assured that all products used at the Leonor Greyl salon are Paraben and alcohol free, all are “naturelle,” though they don’t make the claim that the products are “bio,” meaning organic.
Many French beauty traditions are rooted in natural processes. The more established ones do not trumpet this fact because, well, it’s simply what they’ve always done. For them it would be akin to announcing the sky is blue. Leonor Greyl is one of these ever so Parisienne, ever so French and predominantly naturelle salons.
If you are lucky enough to get Stephan, a sort of charming French hairstylist version of a George Clooney, to give you a blowout, you will walk out of the salon and to your Crillon High Tea feeling – and looking – like a princess.

The choices were overwhelming, sometimes deceptive… I searched all over the world and in the end, I found only a handful of products that I felt confident using and recommending. I selected the best of their kind and I’m proud to showcase them at the Detox Market,” states Grandury.
Behind each brand stands a passionate green entrepreneur, whose life has been touched by personal challenges, creating a desire to craft products that promote health and wellness. Real people moving in a new direction based on zero toxins and minimal impact on our environment.

“For small start-up brands like mine,” says Alissa White, Owner of Matcha Source a Detox Market participant, “This is an incredible opportunity to showcase my product in an affordable and urban setting alongside other likeminded companies. Being part of this group of distinguished brands brought together by Valerie is a rave endorsement.”

Just come curious to discover our products and I am confident you will leave convinced,” says Grandury.
Patyka is a Parisienne beauty care brand that is not just delicious for what is between the covers, but also has put much care into its packaging as well. Unwrapping the Absolis Patyka Neroli Brightening body lotion is like unwrapping origami.
Not only do you find the treasure of the smooth-smelling EcoCert, CosmeBio, Leaping Bunny certified lotion inside the package, you are also welcomed with a message announcing that you have just unwrapped a “tree-free” box that is made from sugar cane residue, flax and hemp. Their philosophy?
back to the EcoBeauty products themselves that Patyka calls “beauté remarquable” a phrase they’ve trademarked.
It translates to “Remarkable Beauty” and is encapsulated by not just an ingredients list but also a philosophy that emphasizes every bit a woman’s feelings of inner beauty. The Patyka manifesto:
My beauty is a work of art…My well being stems from an approach that rids me of any complexes and respects me and my environment…Modern, responsible, active and demanding – my beauty bears testimony to the fact that an effective and intelligent cosmetic solution exists…
Each product, as well as their line of perfumes, is carefully crafted and blended with an apothecarist’s wisdom. Case in point: Neroli body lotion is a blend of Neroli and Sesame: Neroli soothes, tones and restores elasticity and is tolerated by most skin types. Sesame is rich in Omegas 3 and 6. Sesame oil is easily absorbed by the skin and takes with it all of the active properties of the substances it is blended with. It also restructures the skin tissue.

In a previous article on lycopene, we learned that super foods can be used to protect our skin and face from sun damage; papaya, rich in natural enzymesand alpha-hydroxy acids is one such food. Papaya and other fruits, can also be used to make a honey face mask by adding honey or plain yogurt. But did you know that you can also use papaya to make your lips look luscious and flake free? I would like to share with you some tips on how to make a lip facial to exfoliate your lips with papaya from The Green Beauty Guide.com
For a quick lip exfoliation, use ripe, juicy papaya. You can use leftovers from a fruit salad or dessert. Mash the papaya flesh into a juicy paste so that you get at least a tablespoon of puree.
Apply a generous amount of papaya pulp to the lips and skin around the lips. Leave on for ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse off with warm water and enjoy smooth, flake-free lips.
For an even quicker exfoliation, rub the inside of papaya skin against your lips for a few minutes.
By the way, pineapple has also natural enzymes andalpha-hydroxy acids that can be used for face exfoliation to rejuvenate, restore elasticity and add glow to our skin. So, next time you want to make a pineapple and papaya smoothie as an energy booster or midday snack, don’t forget it is one of the best lip facial beauty remedies.
P.S. Don’t miss our discussion on Natural Beauty Tips and Remedies with holistic nutritionist and author of her best selling book The Green Beauty Guide, Julie Gabriel. We will be live on Feel and Look Fabulous with Irina on Tuesday, July 20th at 11:00am PT

So it seems to have gotten popular in Hollywood to start having kids when you’re 45! But for the rest of us, our 40’s mean the onset of menopause and the end of possibilities for natural, organic conception and childbearing.
What is wonderful to bear witness to these days, however, is women’s beauty manifest at all ages and in so many forms, such diversity.
Menopause need be no different. It’s a time of womanhood that ushers in a new era of the feminine. Strong and beautiful and womanly. Here are some natural herbs that some of have suggested can ease the physical transition.
On top of these measures natural remedies for menopause include herbs, homoeopathic remedies and aromatherapy oils.
Herbs often used include: [In addition to Black Cohosh]
Let’s focus on Dong Quai. This is a popular herbal, natural remedy in China and other parts of the Orient. It is seen there as a sort of wonder remedy for women.
Dong Quai is, foremost, a blood tonic used to nurture the blood and invigorate the blood circulation. The interlinked acupuncture meridians are the Liver, Heart and Spleen. Some of the chemical ingredients of Dong Quai include vitamin B (nictonic acid, folic acid, vitamin B12), and vitamin A. Its ability to regulate and normalise hormonal imbalances means that this herb can be immensely worthwhile in alleviating symptoms asscociated with PMT, infertilty and the menopause.
Healthy Food And Exercise
Other recommended remedies are more of a lifestyle approach and include, healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables or the “Mediterranean Diet” of lean meats and fish for proteins. We always need to include fair doses of exercise and it’s highly recommended to avoid stress and stressful situations.
Soy is another key ingredient in alleviating some of the side-effects of menopause. The ‘active constituents’ in soy that act as a natural remedy for menopause are the soy isoflavones, and it is suggested that you take 50 mg of soy isoflavones per day or get it in your diet by eating tempeh, tofu, soy milk and other soy products.
Another little secret, from WebMD, is natural progesterone cream
A study published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1999 found that natural progesterone cream significantly reduced hot flashes compared to the placebo group. In The Wisdom of Menopause, Northrup says that a 2% progesterone skin cream works in about 85% of perimenopausal women.
A little as 1/4 tsp once per day can ease hot flashes. Make sure that you read the labels of natural progesterone cream products careful as there is great variability of progesterone content.
